What is co-sleeping ?
The practice of co-sleeping is very ancient. It only disappeared recently, about 150 years ago. In fact, until the 19th century, children shared their parents’ bed to save space and for other reasons like safety, warmth, and the convenience of breastfeeding. It is only under the influence of new standards, notably that the marital bed must be preserved as the couple’s place and only the couple, that things changed; furthermore, medicine and psychoanalysis recommend that the child learn to sleep alone. But today, the practice is coming back, and it is spreading more and more among young parents. The principle is simple: Parents and children sleep together, either in the same room or directly in the same bed. You’ll know more about the practice of co-sleeping, it’s advantages and inconvients in this article.
Why do you need a Co-sleeper ?
If you want to practice co-sleeping and in order to preserve all the safety of your baby during his sleep and yours, it is comforting to use a co-sleeper or a bassinet specially designed for this, no more ten back and forth trips between the parental bed and the baby’s bed in the middle of the night, to bottlefeed, or breastfeed him, put back the pacifier, or give a hug, because your child can sleep right next to you while keeping his own little space and preserving yours, thus avoiding any risk for you and your baby allowing you to sleep serenely without worrying about the well-being of your baby: it is a real ally to spend more peaceful nights when you are young parents!
But suppose the co-sleeping bed is an ideal alternative to ward off restless nights. In that case, it is essential to know the differences between the existing models before making your choice to find the one that best suits your serenity and baby’s sleep!
Difference between in-bed Co-sleepers and bed-side bassinets?
Before making your choice, first, you should know the type of co-sleeper you want to have. We can say that co-sleepers came in two types :
If you want to practice co-sleeping but you don’t want to share your bed with your baby for whatever reason, bed-side bassinets are the best option. In addition to reassuring your child, the bed-side bassinets are a practical solution for mom and dad. You no longer have to leave the comfort of your bed to breastfeed or relieve your baby when he is crying.
Encouraging breastfeeding, these types of bassinet offer you as a new mother the opportunity to rest after a tiring day.
Feeding a baby in the middle of the night is usually frequent and takes time. With the co-sleeping, the mother can keep a lying position close to her little one without getting up to see him in his little nest.
Indeed, the bed-side bassinet is designed to stick to the parental bed’s edge as its extension while maintaining a space dedicated to the baby.
Most bed-side bassinets are versatile and adjustable to suit your needs. They usually come with a foldable part, and when folded back up, they can transform into a classic crib for baby’s naps.
The in-bed co-sleeper is the best way to share your bed with your newborn baby in complete safety. This option allows you to sleep peacefully with your baby while respecting safety standards to avoid any accidents.
The in-bed co-sleeper usually has raised sides to avoid covering your baby with anything, especially if you have a deep sleep like me.
Most of these co-sleepers are portable, so they can be carried wherever you go, so your baby can sleep in a familiar environment.
How to choose your Co-sleeper ?
Do you want to practice co-sleeping with your baby? Discover our tips to find the perfect co-sleeper that suits your needs best.
Opt for a secure co-sleeper or bassinet model. It is essential to check the security systems of your co-sleeper before purchasing it. If you consider buying a bassinet, Choose it with non-slip feet or with a brake system for those on wheels. The fixing device must be efficient and robust. Finally, check the quality and the safety of the materials chosen for the design of your co-sleeper.
Choose your co-sleeper according to its material. You can also choose a bassinet in aluminum alloy or iron and textile with breathable mesh. These models have the advantage of being lighter. Pay attention to the general quality of the co-sleeper. It must be resistant, secure, and comfortable. The best models have a metal or aluminum frame.
Don't forget to look for a good quality mattress. Choose a firm one. Know that synthetic foams have an antibacterial and anti-mite function. In contrast, natural materials such as coconut fiber, wool, natural latex are antiallergic and thermoregulatory.
An unfortunate accident can easily happen with a baby, so be sure to choose a co-sleeper bed with removable parts, so you can be able to wash them whenever needed and keep your baby's bed clean.
Check the dimensions of your co-sleeper whether you choose a bassinet or an in bed one. Before buying, make sure you have enough space next to your bed. The crib should be large enough for more comfort. Several sizes are available.
Most important: check the weight limit! The bed must be able to support a minimum of 7 kg for more durability.
If you travel often, opt for a nomad co-sleeper that folds up and can be taken anywhere. It is lighter and can be stored very easily like a classic co-sleeper. You will no longer have to worry about the well-being of your baby and his sleep.
It is essential to verify that your model is adjustable in height and inclination for an optimal position. Some models have a detachable side panel to facilitate breastfeeding from the parental bed. This system is very secure because there is no space between the bassinet and the bed. Make sure that the bassinet is light weighted and easy to move around in the house, so you can keep an eye on your baby while he's napping.

How to co-sleep safely?
There are a few rules to follow to practice co-sleeping safely:
- First, make sure that the baby cannot fall out of bed or get trapped between the mattress and the bed. The room temperature should be between 60.80 °F to 64.40 °F, no more, no less. Make sure that pets do not sleep in the bed or near your toddler. If either of you smokes cigarettes, avoid smoking in this room at all costs.
- Never leave your baby alone in the bed, especially when he begins to move around a lot since he may risk falling if you use an in-bed co-sleeper.
- When it comes to your baby, don’t cover her too much to avoid hyperthermia. Make sure that the blanket does not cover his head.
- Finally, in certain circumstances, it is better to avoid co-sleeping: taking medication, illnesses, drug or alcohol dependence, premature baby, abnormal fatigue.
Co-sleeping is essential from birth until the 4th to 6th month. But it can continue during the breastfeeding period, up to 2 to 3 years, as long as this is convenient for you and your baby.
Here are some tips to keep in mind to smoothly stop co-sleeping:
- First of all, it would be helpful to co-sleep only at night. During the baby’s naps, put him in his own room so that he gets used to it.
Never stop it suddenly. Give your child advance notice, which is a period of time after which he will go to sleep in his room. Explain things gently. And let him know the rest of the day he can still sleep with you.
- Help him accept this transition by giving him a motive or reason. For example: “You are now a grown up,” “Now that you don’t need your pacifier anymore”…
- Make sure that he likes his room.
- Make the transition smoothly; it consists of moving your child gradually in his room.
The first few nights are always complicated, don’t give up, and don’t hesitate to congratulate him and encourage him. And don’t forget Never go back on your decision.
Listen to your heart and your parenting instincts. No one knows better than you what your child needs to be completely safe. Societal injunctions should (no longer) influence your final choice.
And if you want to experience co-sleeping, consider choosing a product that can grow into a separate crib, very gently!
